Coonskin Cap

I often run the same pics of the same people in the same spots. That's because I often end up skating on my days off and most of my friends have jobs. This page is something of a chronicle of my skateboarding life and I have my favorite spots and lines for sure. I am pretty content with what I do. Skateboarding provides a release from work, society, from everything and all that matters to me is how I feel at the end of the day. That feeling can usually be described as DRUNK. And I am content that way. To quote Mark Conahan "Contentment seems a personal affront to some people. If you are content you have something they don’t. You must have acquired that contentment on the backs of the less content."

Marc circa 1978

Photo by Charles Yeager. Snapped on Fuentes' driveway quarterpipe back in the day. The day when I was 6 years old.

I'm pretty sure that Kilwag covered all of this already but I had to post this pic. Punk Point Devo Cruiser 8.25x32. Thanks TOM for the tip and order me one right HERE.

Marc's Board Shop at Capitol Flea Market

The man, the myth, the skater, Marc has moved his board shop back to Charleston. You will find a great selection of decks, trucks, wheels, and more and the super kind service that Marc has been providing for over 20 years.

Cold Snap Curb Slap

Yeah, there were snow flurries today. It was wet and cold. But I didn't let that stop me from getting some rides in on my day off. Beats a day at work for sure.

Choice News

Choice News was a short lived skate zine produced by Professor Slappe and me back in 1988. Inspired by "Freezine" out of Canada we set out to cover our local scene and skateboarding wherever it took us. In April of 1988 Slappe took a trip to the Nation's Capitol and returned with some HOT wallride pics. With his permission we are reposting them here on my page. Thanks SS!

Frontside Slappie Pic by Grom

Eli shot this one a Sunday morning a few weeks ago. Frontside slappie edger hands free finally.

Wall Ride 1989

My friend KVON posted this wallride pic which inspired me to rerun this one of Davie Hayes in the midst of a frontside mute grab wallride circa 1989.

Rarely Seen

I've been re-learning frontside curb slappies without grabbing the board. This blur was snapped back in 1989 or so at the now defunct City National curb spot.

The lot was full of these curbs and you could do boardslides for days. They don't make curbs, or bony knees, like they used to.

Me and Cheese circa 1988

Yes, the Vision Street Wear suede hi has been reissued.

Zig Zagger Re-Revisited

The Zig Zagger by Krooked is one of the best boards I've ever ridden. Here is a clip from today's session.

Then and Now and Every Now and Again

20 years of non compliance has made me rebellious to a fault. The top photo was snapped in or around 1989. I was riding a Santa Cruz Tom Knox with Thunder Trucks and some OJ Street Razors. The backwards ball cap ala Steve Saiz, the cargo pants, Mess's Thrasher sweatshirt, and those white hi top Reeboks all scream "Late 80's!!!"
The bottom pic was shot in August of 2008. I've lost the hat and the hi tops but the no comply still is still a favorite.

9x32 "Knox" Shape Deck by Eastbilt

Big Ups to Eastbilt! This was delivered just a few days after I placed my order. This is a Tom Knox type shape and I can't wait to set this up and hit the park.

Zig Zagger + Slab = Fun

It's a pretty simple formula. The Zig Zagger by Krooked is now set up with Indy trucks (149's) and 85a 60mm Rat Bones. This set up is perfect for street skating. Thanks Marc! Photos by Emily Hope.

Coonskin Is Open!

This is old news to those of you who have been to the skatepark since Saturday but Coonskin is open with some notable improvements to the parking lot (new gravel, treated lumber border, mulch) and the swampy ditch has been filled in with rocks. The swamp has claimed many boards so hopefully the rocks will cut down on the amount of water that collects in that area. Thanks to the Kanawha County Parks and Recreation Board for keeping the only FREE skatepark in the Valley up and running.

Kentucky Cone Fest

It all went downhill yesterday in Ashland, KY. I only wish I could have been there. Photo from the Herald Dispatch. That's Marc's Board Shop Team Rider Ben Barkey!
